Episode Summary

Antonio Pagano, CTO and co-founder of Symbol Security and founder of Wano, discusses the evolution of cybersecurity threats—particularly AI-enhanced phishing attacks—and the human vulnerabilities that remain the weakest link in security. He shares insights from running two companies across continents, bootstrapping Symbol Security for six years, and building Wano's 45-person development team in Colombia while maintaining work-life balance and continuous learning.

Pull Quotes

“Most of the security breaches are coming from there. There's a lot in cyber security, but we see a lot of pressure in the technical part of cyber security—firewalls and networking and prevention systems that prevent attacks. But we are focused on the human part of the equation.”

On how AI is making phishing attacks more sophisticated

“One of the signs of a phishing email is the grammar or how well written the email was. Some of these malicious actors are not native in the language they're attacking, but with AI, they cannot only translate the message but make it sound natural. That makes things harder.”

On bootstrapping Symbol Security for six years without venture funding

“Sometimes the constraints create the opportunity to find ways to do things. Not having a lot of cash makes you think about how to efficiently do things. Sometimes what you don't get gets you something.”

“I think it's a failure when you don't learn from what you're doing. But if you take the input that you're getting and making that feedback get to your app, then you are learning, you're growing, and it's not like you lost what you've done.”

On why he pursued an MBA eight years into running Wano

“Whenever we are not in a position to learn, it's hard that anybody will teach us anything. You cannot think that the idea that you're putting out on the market is correct. It's a fact that you have to validate it, you have to learn from the market, you have to incorporate what you learn and take that with humility.”

Hi, welcome to Tales From The Sky Lounge, it's a podcast about business consulting and venture investing. We get out there in the world, we talk to people who are making it happen, and we get their stories. If you could like and subscribe, it really helps us get our message out.

So today in the Sky Lounge, Antonio Pagano. Hey Antonio, good to have you here. Thanks for having me. Well, Antonio, who are you and what are you working on these days?

Yeah, well a bunch of things. I'm the founder of a consultancy company, a software development consultancy company in Colombia, which has the name Wano. What we do there is we accelerate companies through technology and we help them maximize the potential for their users. And on the side, not so on the side but taking a lot of my time, most of my time, I'm the CTO and co-founder of Symbol Security. Symbol Security is a software as a service platform that provides cyber security awareness to multiple companies. So yes, at this moment I'm dealing with these two big things, and I enjoy it by the way.

Very cool. Well, a lot to unpack, and you're in Boston if I remember right?
